Catheter ablation of supraventricular arrhythmias: state of the art.
نویسنده
چکیده
The era of catheter ablation for the treatment of arrhythmias began in 1981 when Dr. Melvin Scheinman performed the first atrioventricular junction ablation using direct current shocks in a patient with drug refractory atrial fibrillation and an uncontrolled ventricular rate.1 Because of the barotrauma associated with intracardiac, high energy shocks, direct current catheter ablation played only a limited role in the treatment of arrhythmias. With the advent of radiofrequency catheter ablation in the late 1980s, the range of arrhythmias amenable to catheter ablation and the number of patients that could be treated safely by catheter ablation vastly expanded. In the past decade, radiofrequency catheter ablation has become firmly established as first line therapy for paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia and typical atrial flutter. Furthermore, although still in an evolutionary phase, catheter ablation to eliminate atrial fibrillation has been demonstrated in the past 5 years to be feasible and clinically useful. The intent of this article is to review the current status of catheter ablation for the treatment of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, atrial flutter, and atrial fibrillation.

Catheter ablation is at the forefront of the management of a range of atrial arrhythmias. In this Series paper, we discuss the underlying mechanisms and the current role of catheter ablation for the three most common atrial arrhythmias encountered in clinical practice: focal atrial tachycardia, atrial flutter, and atrial fibrillation. The mechanisms of focal atrial tachycardia and atrial flutte...

متن کاملCatheter ablation of supraventricular arrhythmias and atrial fibrillation.
Supraventricular arrhythmias are relatively common, often persistent, and rarely life-threatening cardiac rhythm disturbances that arise from the sinus node, atrial tissue, or junctional sites between the atria and ventricles. The term "supraventricular arrhythmia" most often is used to refer to supraventricular tachycardias and atrial flutter. The term "supraventricular tachycardia" commonly r...
متن کاملAblation of supraventricular arrhythmias in adult congenital heart disease: A contemporary review.
Supraventricular arrhythmias are an important and increasing cause of morbidity in adults with congenital heart disease, requiring specific management strategies. Pharmacological treatment has limited efficacy, and is often associated with some side-effects. Major improvements in catheter ablation techniques have opened new opportunities to better understand underlying mechanisms of supraventri...
